What are the symptoms of COVID-19?
Symptoms of COVID-19, the flu and the common cold are often similar, making it difficult to determine what might be making you feel sick. People with COVID-19/FLU/RSV have a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus and may include: cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fever, chills, muscle pain, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Signs of a serious medical emergency may include: severe shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, coughing up blood, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, new confusion, inability to wake or stay awake, bluish lips or face. If you feel that you are seriously ill, please notify a healthcare professional and if you are having a medical emergency, please call 9-1-1.
What will my test results tell me?
Your test results will confirm whether or not you are infected with SARS-CoV-2. If your results are positive, it is important to limit your exposure to other people and to continue to monitor your symptoms. If your results are negative, the virus was not present in the sample you provided. However, it is important to note that the virus may not be detected if the sample was not collected as directed. If you have reason to believe you have been exposed, it is important to follow up with a healthcare provider for further evaluation or to get re-tested. After receiving your results, your physician of record can answer any questions you may have and help determine the next steps of care.
How is COVID-19 treated?
There is currently no treatment for COVID-19. For severe cases, hospitalization and respiratory support may be required. Mild cases are treated by managing symptoms with over-the-counter medicines for fever such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), plenty of fluids, and rest. Always consult with a medical professional.
What is the difference between this test and the antibody test?
There are two types of tests that can be administered for COVID-19. One is to determine if you currently have the virus and the other, commonly known as the antibody test, is to determine if you have previously had the virus (serology).
What is the COVID+ Test?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends co-testing for COVID-19 and influenza if you are experiencing any symptoms of either condition. Overlapping symptoms of COVID-19 and the flu include fever, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, and sore throat. For details visit: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/index.html.
